Fox News Comments

When I authored my post regarding the study showing the correlation between misinformed individuals and Fox News I mentioned that the only thing worse than Fox News was a hardcore Fox News viewer. I pointed out that there was no way to argue with them, that regardless of being presented with facts that they would flat-out disagree. Frantz Fanon, a French psychiatrist, had this to say regarding the phenomenon.

“Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn’t fit in with the core belief.”  – Frantz Fanon

Using Frantz’ comments, these hardcore Fox News viewers have a very strong belief, further cemented by their intense trust in Fox News. Fox News tells them what they want to hear, they believe it because it syncs up with their beliefs, and if someone comes to them with evidence to the contrary they will “rationalize, ignore and even deny” it. Before you go thinking that I’m picking on Fox News again, I’m not, I’m picking on hardcore Fox News viewers. As I’ve said before, all of the news media engages in supporting agendas. Fox News, and their hardcore viewers, just happen to be, at times, incredibly extreme in their voices.

Case and point, a new website has blessed the bits of the internet, Fox News Comments. This website includes screen captures from Fox News’ website submitted by users. Obviously these comments are highlighted and cherry picked from all the other comments. They’re not saying everyone on Fox News’ website is crazy, just these select people. When I talk about hardcore Fox News viewers, these are the people I’m talking about. In the first page of this website I saw numerous cases of, mindless-ness, racism, bigotry, narrow-mindedness, and reverse-logic.
