I know that conservatives look up to Ronald Reagan as some sort of political super hero. Some think he is, some think he isn’t, but I’m not here to change anyone’s mind. However, I’m here to set off a logic bomb, are you ready.

We all know that Reagen was President of the United States at the close of the Cold War, in fact he aided in persuading leaders to dismantle the Soviet Union and thus the communism therein. We also know that some conservatives consider unions to be communist in nature, though the logic they used to come to that conclusion eludes me to this day. If you happen to be one of those that considers unions communist and look up to Reagan I submit to you the following.

Here’s a transcript for those that can’t watch the YouTube video.

But restoring the American dream requires more than restoring a sound, productive economy, vitally important as that is. It requires a return to spiritual and moral values, values so deeply held by those who came here to build a new life. We need to restore those values in our daily life, in our neighborhoods and in our government’s dealings with the other nations of the world.

These are the values inspiring those brave workers in Poland. The values that have inspired other dissidents under Communist domination. They remind us that where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost. They remind us that freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. You and I must protect and preserve freedom here or it will never be passed on to our children. Today the workers in Poland are showing a new generation not how high is the price of freedom but how much it is worth that price.

Did you catch that sentence in the middle of the 2nd paragraph? “They remind us that where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost.”

Some might point out that during his Presidency, Reagan essentially destroyed the Air Traffic Controllers Union. However, my research indicates that a regulation existed prior to union’s strike that prevented such action. Their violation of that regulation lead to the forfeiture of their jobs, that doesn’t contradict his campaign speech comments. I would have agreed with his actions towards the union, they broke the rules, end of story. According to a labor law professor at George Washington University Law School, Reagan’s actions, “sent a message to the private employer community that it would be all right to go up against the unions.” That may be, but seeing as numerous unions still exist in the private sector to this day, I can’t imagine that it had that great of an impact. Reagan had himself been in the Screen Actors Guild during his acting career.

Disagree all you want, but Reagan said it and there’s no way that single sentence could be taken out of context and be understood any other way. Even the sentence by itself carries the same meaning. Some may even say that Reagan started out as a Democrat and transitioned to Republican, definitely true, however, at the time of this speech he was running as a Republican. Reagan was apparently in support of unions, unless they abused their powers, which I definitely agree with but that’s not an excuse to punish the honest and helpful unions that serve a valid purpose.

Sometimes I wonder if the hatred towards unions has more to do with the word “union” being in the country name “Soviet Union.” You want to see some glaring logic, I’ve met union members that are against unions, explain that one. For instance…

Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, let’s talk about hypocrisy, are members of AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). Wanna see something funny, look at AFTRA’s website, http://www.aftra.org/, down at the bottom you’ll see a link to AFLCIO.ORG with the text, “Click here to learn what you can do to support workers in Wisconsin, Ohio and around the country.” Whoa, Sean and Rush better cancel their memberships and quit their jobs, they’re aiding in the support of unions.

But that’s straying away from the original point. Many conservatives look up to Reagan for his conservative views and somehow think he felt the same way when it came to unions, that they’re all greedy commies looking to get paid exorbitant amounts of money for doing simple jobs. However, based on Reagan’s campaign speech from his Republican run at being President he feels that unions, that do not abuse their powers, serve a very real purpose.
