Apparently, Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy (Republican), in a video taken at a town hall meeting in Polk County earlier this year, when asked whether he’d vote to cut his own $174,000 salary he said the following.
I can guarantee you, or most of you, I guarantee that I have more debt than all of you. With 6 kids, I still pay off my student loans. I still pay my mortgage. I drive a used minivan. If you think I’m living high on the hog, I’ve got one paycheck. So I struggle to meet my bills right now. Would it be easier for me to get more paychecks? Maybe, but at this point I’m not living high on the hog.
In all fairness, he did say that he would consider taking a pay cut, as long as that plan included all public employees. But you know what, I don’t care, the fact of the matter is that $174K is still a lot more than any of those public employees whose union is under attack by the governor. Cry me a river, I don’t feel a bit sorry for you and how tough it is. How dare you act like somehow you deserve that higher salary because you have student loans and six kids, nobody was forcing you at gunpoint to have sex those six times, nobody forced you to take out student loans. That is nobody else’s responsibility, just yours. And pretending like times are tough for you when you are earning a yearly salary that a lot of people would consider wealthy just because you have those expenses is extremely hypocritical. Your debt is not the taxpayer’s problem and not a valid excuse for earning more money, anybody else that went to their employer and asked for a raise just because they have a lot of debt would either get laughed at or fired (or both).
All that aside, what happened following the videos’ internet release?
Democrats began flagging the comments about his taxpayer-funded salary, which just so happens to be nearly three times the median income in Wisconsin, shortly thereafter the criticism’s began. A day after the video was posted the Polk County GOP contacted Blip.tv and ordered the video be taken down claiming that the video was a copyright infringement. Nice try guys, just trying to cover up a mess are we. You’ve got some arrogant douche of a Representative acting like his six figure income is a stretch for him while the Wisconsin government works to chop the legs off of every other public employee to fix a budget broken by unnecessary tax cuts for corporations, better clear that up so you’re image isn’t tarnished anymore than it already is. Furthermore, Duffy’s office stated that any Democratic criticism of his response was a “misleading attack.” How in the world could a video of what Duffy said be mislead? It’s pretty straightforward, he said what he said, it wasn’t cut up and taken out of context. Someone asked him, point-blank, about his willingness to take a pay cut and while said he would, if the lower class minions took a cut as well, he tried to pass off the fact that his generous salary somehow was hardly enough for him to get by, end of story. You want to see a public employee that’s being paid too much for their job…here you go.
