Way to go vegans

Becoming a vegan is a personal choice, and everyone is within their right to make that choice. But when that choice affects the life or lives of your children, that’s a problem. The Guardian published an article about a French strict vegan couple that has gone on trial after being charged with neglect or food deprivation following the death of their breastfed 11-month-0ld. Aside from being underweight (5.7kg as opposed to 8kg), she suffered from Vitamin A and B12 deficiencies (most likely caused by the mother’s eating habits) which left her susceptible to infection. The cause of death was determined to be a pneumonia-related illness. The couple said they became vegan after seeing a TV program about how animals are taken to abattoirs (slaughterhouses). Um, how else do you get from an animal to a piece of meat??

Everyone knows how breastfeeding works, what you eat eventually goes to the baby, ergo if you’re not taking in enough of the right nutrients, you’re baby’s not getting enough of the right nutrients. In all honesty the couple could have probably remained vegan and still passed the proper nutrients to their child with a number of vegan friendly foods containing those missing vitamins or supplements.

Sadly, this couple said they “mistrust traditional medicine.” Sound’s just like the original thinkers that believe children get autism from vaccines. Even when faced with incredible amounts of evidence suggesting otherwise, this type of person will take one bogus study and illogically provide it with more credit than it deserves. Here’s where the neglect comes in, the couple ignored their doctor’s advice to take the baby to a hospital when they went in for her nine-month checkup and found she was suffering from bronchitis and losing weight. Instead, they treated her with cabbage poultices, mustard and camphor and washed her with earth and clay instead of giving her baths.

The family’s lawyer stated that the couple was completely aware of the mistakes they made (I would certainly hope so). If convicted they could face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Ouch, how about next time you listen to the doctors, you know, the doctors that went to school for several years of their lives and learned techniques that have been working quite well for decades. The root of the problem wasn’t so much their diet, but more so the fact that they ignored their doctor’s advice, even with the vegan parent’s diet that baby would be alive and well had they taken her to a hospital.
